Μύ Given how poor some relatively new films can look on disc, it's quite incredible to see the quality of "The General" on DVD. This classic Buster Keaton silent receives a beautiful release that fans will love.
Both restored and digitally remastered, the picture quality is excellent. Obviously for a film from 1927 there are a few flecks of print damage but in no way do they diminish the enjoyment of the film. The sepia tones are radiant, and the detail high in a picture transfer that's a constant delight.
The 2.0 sound mix is a surround effort that places the music score to excellent effect around the speakers. Listen out in particular for the drum-bang in the rear speakers as a misdirected cannonball blows up during the cannon scene.
Beautifully designed and humorous animated menus take you through to the extra features, which consist of two bonus Keaton shorts. "The Balloonatic" (1923), sees Keaton clambering around a hot air balloon, while "Cops" (1922) has Keaton charging into a police parade aboard a runaway horse and cart, with gag-filled chaos ensuing. With silent films now long gone from the TV schedules, here's a DVD that's an absolute treasure.
