Sweet November (2001)
12

How many times can this story be made into a movie: young man (Keanu Reeves) falls for a woman (Charlize Theron) only to discover she has a dark secret which may well end in hankies being extensively blown?

Really, if you swapped Keanu for C Thomas Howell and Erika Eleniak for Theron, this is the kind of pap that would sit quite happily in Channel 5's daytime schedules. But anyway, for all you diehard Keanu fans, here we go.

Nelson Moss (Reeves) is a workaholic who's just been dumped and laid off. He bumps into hippyish Sara (Theron), who tells him she can change his attitude to life in one month. But after that month (November, of course) they have to split.

This seems like a rather convoluted way for her to get him into bed, which she does quite quickly, but if changing your life means getting to sleep with the gorgeous Theron, then where do you sign up?

But all is not what it seems and just as Nelson begins to fall hard for his ladyfriend, her secret is uncovered. Can you tell what it is yet?

All in all, this is fairly interminable stuff. Not exactly hate-inducing, just dull. The only good things are Theron and a nice cameo from Isaacs as her gay pal, but even that (another gay best mate? Come on!) is a tad hackneyed.

The funniest thing about "Sweet November" however, is Reeves, who once again proves that unless he's playing a thickie, or surrounded by guns and special effects, he is an extraordinarily rubbish actor.
