Never Say Never Again DVD (1983)

Sean Connery creaks into action in this rogue Bond film, long a thorn in MGM's side and now out on one of their DVDs. To their credit, they've produced a nice disc but it hardly compares to their recent releases of the official series.

For a start the picture, though widescreen, is not anamorphic (a process which carries extra coding to create a more detailed picture on a widescreen TV). But the print used is in good shape and the image quality is actually quite sharp, and a marked improvement on the old pan and scan VHS outings.

A 2.0 sound mix accompanies the on-screen mayhem with mixed results. Flying missiles manage to cross from the rear to the front speakers, but little effort is put into Bond's motorbike chase, which sticks to the centre speaker.

The quality animated main menu suggests fun to come, but sadly the only extra feature is the theatrical trailer. MGM could have produced one of their excellent Bond documentaries on this 'unofficial' entry to the series, but at least the film looks good on disc.
