Fred Flintstone (John Goodman) is a good guy, a real brick, the thick but steady-as-a-rock sort who unexpectedly gets a promotion at work. However, Fred's success is a set-up and when he and Barney (Moranis) realise this, they have to find and defeat those who are planning to use him for their own evil ends.
But not too evil, okay? You don't want to frighten the children - and you definitely don't want to engage the audience. Instead, the film sets out to fill its hour-and-a-half with some pretty pictures.
Director Brian Levant is an admitted fan of the original cartoon series and you could guess that straight away. Every detail of the show is lovingly brought to the big screen and done with an air of wit and cleverness.
Only there's just no story worth speaking of to involve you. If you get a brief flicker of concern over Fred's job prospects, you're lucky. Otherwise, it's just a series of nicely shot and over-bright sets with the cast blocking your view of the background. Of the cast, John Goodman is by far the best because he really does manage to be like Fred from the cartoons. He's much better at it than Mark Addy in the equally poor sequel.
