North by Northwest DVD (1959)

Another wonderful twist is added to the magic of the thrilling "North by Northwest", with a gorgeous transfer to DVD.

The Vistavision and Technicolor shooting processes produce rich colours that are beautifully showcased by this immaculate disc. There is a remarkable radiance to the image, which has been sourced from a near-flawless print.

While it might appear impossible, further excitement is added to this film with a magnificent 5.1 sound mix. Quite rightly, the effects concentrate on the front speakers, with the magnificent Bernard Herrmann score gaining in resonance and depth. Listen out though for that classic scene where Cary is given a crop dusting from a plane that attacks him from all directions - the speakers and sub woofer increase the explosive thrills.

For the film transfer alone this disc is a winner, but Warners have surpassed themselves with quality extra features, accessed from inventive animated menus. The commentary by screenwriter Ernest Lehman is one of the star attractions, although it does take him a while to warm-up. Once in full swing, he has plenty of anecdotes about working with Hitch and the problems that they encountered.

The production stills gallery, trailers, and isolated score are all good additions, especially together with the excellent all-new 40-minute documentary on the making of the film. It's hosted by Eva Marie Saint and features contributions from cast and crew, including Martin Landau, who does a mean Hitch impersonation. Loads of behind-the-scenes stills, storyboards, and a little footage combine with interviews and anecdotes to fascinating effect.

At the time of release, "North by Northwest" is Β£12.99 - it's hard to think of a better value disc out there.
