Peeping Tom DVD (1960)

The background to "Peeping Tom" and the ensuing destruction of director Michael Powell's career could have made for fascinating extra material for a DVD. This Warner Â鶹ԼÅÄ Video/Studio Canal release hints on the disc cover at the controversy that surrounded this film, but fails to further explore the history.

Mercifully the transfer of the movie to DVD is done reasonably well. The often vivid tones of the film remain fairly sharp and don't smear, although there is a little grain at times.

The 1.0 sound mix is clear and doesn't distort, but is hardly powerful.

The one extra feature of interest on this disc is the photo gallery. With only 15 stills, including some behind-the-scenes shots, it is small but fascinating. An opportunity to release a better DVD remains. You'd certainly be better off experiencing the film on this disc than compared to previous pan and scan TV outings, but a proper 'Collector's Edition', like the excellent Region 1 release (it includes a commentary and documentary), is sorely needed for this movie.
