Manhunter DVD (1986)

"Manhunter" is often forgotten in the oppressive shadow of "The Silence of the Lambs", but it is well worth seeing, especially courtesy of the limited edition (100,000 units) two-disc Region 1 DVD release.

The heavy use of colour filters by cinematographer Dante Spinotti presents a potential nightmare in terms of DVD picture quality. This THX-approved transfer is a delight to watch, with even the heaviest saturated blues and greens remaining accurate and sharp. At times, the film looks remarkably fresh, and it will no doubt be a real treat for fans.

The 5.1 sound mix concentrates on building subtle atmospherics and the music score to excellent effect.

Two featurettes are provided on disc one. The first is an interesting interview with Dante Spinotti, discussing his working relationship with director Michael Mann and his filming style. The second feature offers retrospective interviews with all the major cast members; not surprisingly, Brian Cox dominates the proceedings.

On disc two you'll find the director's cut of "Manhunter", which features three minutes of extra footage. It's not THX-mastered and you may find it a little distressing to watch after the beautiful transfer on disc one.

Also included with this release is a 24-page 'confidential' file of rare photos, essays, and scary scribbly notes that you can attach to your wall and freak people out with. It's the finishing touch to a brilliant DVD release that breathes new unsettling life into a classy film.
