Regeneration DVD (1997)

"Regeneration" is a war film that soaks into your subconscious to powerful effect. The importance of a good transfer to DVD is paramount, so allowing the movie to do its work without any technical distractions. This Artificial Eye disc is therefore well worth the money.

The picture quality is clear and the colour balance is rich and warm. This is in contrast to the scenes in the battleground where the dank decay of the trenches is mired in grotesque and unforgettable detail.

A very good 2.0 mix traumatises the speakers around you with the sounds of trench warfare to gutting effect. It is also capable of communicating the subtle peace of the Craiglockhart hospital where the shell shocked men of this drama seek refuge from their thoughts.

A short 'making of' documentary and a series of interviews on the disc reveal a cast and crew serious in intent to properly respect a conflict that now belongs to the last century. Director Gillies MacKinnon is keen not to create a film that is simply depressing, but that is instead about healing. It shows in a film that does not opt for simple, emotive shock tactics.
