Remember the Titans (2001)
PG

American football movies have never really captured the imagination of British cinema audiences, so when people catch wind of the fact that "Remember the Titans" is a 'football' movie, the likelihood is they'll look to see what time "The Grinch" is on.

But you'd be silly to miss "Remember the Titans", because it's got Denzel Washington in it (generally a good sign), it's not just about gridiron, it's not as predictable as you might think, and it's actually rather good.

Based on a true story, Washington plays Herman Boone, a coach drafted into the top spot at a just-integrated Virginia high school in the early 1970s, much to the annoyance of the suspicious locals and current coach Yoast (Patton). With much of the town against him - as well as many of the team - Boone must both change attitudes and make sure he wins.

If you simply can't stomach any kind of sentimental manipulation, then don't bother. But, aside from the occasionally trite resolutions, such as the initially-reluctant star white quarterback Gerry (Hurst) becoming best buds with his black comrades over the course of one bonding weekend, this is enjoyably stirring stuff.

The performances too - not counting the always reliable Washington and Patton - are first-rate, with gritty newcomers Hurst and Pardue vindicating those who believe there's more to teen actors than the likes of Freddie Prinze Jr.

A tad sanctimonious, yes, but go with the flow and you'll be in for a lump-in-the-throat, highly entertaining time.
