Overboard DVD (1987)

The pairing of Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn in a romantic comedy might sound a little too saccharine for some. But "Overboard" is a classic example of ludicrously enjoyable 80s comedies, typified by cheesy films like "The Money Pit", "The Secret of my Success", "Vice Versa", and plenty more. Now released onto DVD it's well worth getting hold of, even if the disc is a little disappointing.

The only problem lies with the picture transfer. While in widescreen, it's not anamorphic, (a process that carries extra coding to create a more detailed picture on a widescreen TV). The image is grainy throughout, although the colours are bright and fresh. It remains an improvement on the fullscreen VHS release, so if you're a signed-up member of the "Overboard" fan club (sign up here if you're not already!) then you'll still enjoy this disc.

The sound comes in a 2.0 Dolby Surround mix that's sharp and punchy. Alan Silvestri's score is a titan among OTT 80s synthesised film music, and it sounds glorious on DVD.

The only extra feature is the trailer, but who needs more when you can gut yourself laughing at Goldie Hawn taking on the slobbish Kurt Russell and his scary offspring?
