Breakfast at Tiffany's DVD (1961)

As DVD covers go, "Breakfast at Tiffany's" has surely one of the most alluring, with Audrey Hepburn gazing out with eyes that seem to follow you and your wallet right to the till. And behind that classic movie legend lies a disc that offers fans much to enjoy but is still left a little wanting.

The bone of contention lies in the picture quality. The colours are vibrant and clear. But there is a fine grain to the picture that is a little disappointing. Mixed in with some slight print damage you're left with an image that is a little rough, especially given the polished chic of the movie. Is it a big problem? No, but you'd expect only the best for such a classic film.

The redeeming quality of the disc is in the new 5.1 sound mix that is a sheer five-star delight. Much of the success of the movie lies with Henry Mancini's score that can switch from brooding tension to delightful comedy overtures in a seamless glance. Re-mastered to make use of the six speakers available, it sounds superb and adds so much to an already enjoyable film.

Extras are limited to a trailer that is not really quite enough. No one needs oodles of useless rubbish to clutter up a disc, but biographies and some production notes would not have hurt. Surely if someone is encountering "Breakfast at Tiffany's" for the first time, it makes commercial sense to list other Audrey Hepburn films? Especially as many of her best are also from Paramount.
