The Story of Us (1999)
PG

"The Story of Us" is a unique film in that it manages to perfectly dissect the reason why it fundamentally doesn't work.

The answer lies in a scene where Bruce Willis is trying to sell the concept for his next book to his agent. It's going to be all about his Gran, how hard she worked, the kids she raised, and her 57 years of marriage. As politely as he can, the agent tells Willis that no one, with all of their own problems, is going to care about this woman.

It's a good little scene, it works well, and the agent is right. So why then is it in a movie that essentially dissects a marriage and the slightly rocky patch it goes through? Who cares?

The couple in question are Bruce Willis and Michelle Pfeiffer. They've been together for 15 years, they have a couple of kids, and the spark in their union has died. Any attempts at re-kindling this once-blazing pyre of love just leads to massive arguments that quickly extinguish it seemingly beyond hope.

That's the plot, and it provides the chance for lots of character introspection and an examination of the sexes. Unfortunately it's just not enough to support any more than a hammy TV movie. Both Willis and Pfeiffer try their best, but they're reduced to flying into rages with one another that appear to come out of nowhere.

In fact, given the limitations of the script and the banality of the film, everyone involved copes well. But there is no real reason why someone should take 90 minutes out of his or her mundane existence just to share in this mundane one.
