Death Becomes Her DVD (1992)

Robert Zemeckis directs this wild and dark comedy with Meryl Streep as a fading actress despised by failed author Goldie Hawn. The tension between them results in some outrageous special effects that are ruined by this sloppy DVD.

The budget for the film might well have been $40m but the print used for this DVD is in very poor shape indeed. This is hardly helped by a transfer of weak colours and extensive grain. As far as the picture quality goes you'd be better hanging onto your VHS copy.

The sound is a little better with good echoing footsteps in chapter six and speaker-drenching rain in chapter seven.

Added features include a trailer that looks markedly worse than the film and a mildly interesting 'making of' documentary. The production notes yield a few interesting facts including writer David Koepp describing how he set out to create "Night of the Living Dead as if Noel Coward had written it."

Such minor distractions cannot help hide a horrible transfer to DVD that irritates throughout and mars the enjoyment of the film.
