We witness a pact with the Devil in Emilie Mayer’s Faust Overture before mezzo-soprano Christa Mayer joins the orchestra for a performance of Gustav Mahler’s grief-stricken Kindertotenlieder. Rife with passionate impulses and exhilaratingly dramatic twists, we end the programme with Tchaikovsky’s Sixth Symphony – the fullest expression of a profoundly emotional man’s feelings are shared with us through his music.
