Dvo艡谩k always claimed to be 鈥渏ust a simple Czech musician鈥� 鈥� and it鈥檚 true that his Eighth Symphony positively dances with optimism and hummable melodies. But there鈥檚 more going on than meets the ear, and that goes double for Bacewicz鈥檚 dazzling Overture, written in Poland in the darkest days of World War 2.

It鈥檚 a life-affirming shout of defiance, from a composer who was never afraid to make herself heard (and deserves to be played more often).
