Concert Information
This afternoon, we hear a piece from Sheffield-born composer Bernard Rands, for which the orchestra’s Cor Anglais player, Gillian Callow, is the soloist. This concerto is flavoured and scented with the sounds of Debussy.
We hear one of four overtures Beethoven wrote for the opera that would eventually become Fidelio - hugely dramatic, lavish and a dark descent into Florestan’s dungeon.
Anna Clyne’s Masquerade, a Â鶹ԼÅÄ commission that received its world premiere at the Last Night of the Proms in 2013, brings us from darkness to light and might be familiar if you have seen and heard the trailers for the 2017 Â鶹ԼÅÄ Proms on television and radio.
This afternoon also includes the symphony that 22-year old Mozart wrote to wow French audiences during his six-month Parisian residency in 1778, and the larger orchestra there gave him the first opportunity to write for clarinets in a symphony.
