A century after its invention, the theremin still sounds like it’s just dropped in from another planet. Carolina Eyck is the world’s leading exponent – and she’ll be making magic from thin air with a concerto written especially for her by Finnish composer Kalevi Aho. Composed by fellow Finn Outi Tarkiainen and premiered at the Â鶹ԼÅÄ Proms in August, Midnight Sun Variations celebrates the endless daylight of the Nordic summer, before John StorgÃ¥rds conducts a work with a very different inspiration: Shostakovich’s fiercely controversial 12th Symphony, dedicated to the memory of Lenin.
