The powerhouse rhythms of Ginastera's 1941 ballet Estancia launch this Latin-spirited concert, continuing with Lalo's atmospheric Symphonie Espagnole, inspired by the virtuoso violinist Pablo de Sarasate and the composer's own partly-Spanish origins.

Bizet's opera Carmen initially offended Parisian audiences but its seductive melodies ultimately won the day, as you can hear in Juanjo Mena's selection from the 1st and 2nd Suites for orchestra. In Ravel's immortal Bolero there are just two tunes, obsessively repeated over an unstoppable crescendo, but the composer's matchless orchestration weaves a powerful spell, all the way to its ecstatic conclusion.
