Marking the year of his centenary, this afternoon we hear three works by the prolific Polish born-Jewish composer Mieczysław Weinberg - who spent the majority of his life in Russia after fleeing Germany's invasion of Poland in 1939.

Alongside the world premiere of Dawn – we also hear Weinberg’s first Flute Concerto. Written for and dedicated to the famous Russian flautist Alexander Korneyev, today – the Â鶹ԼÅÄ Philharmonic’s own Principal Flute, Alex Jakeman, performs it.

Of the 22 symphonies Weinberg wrote – this afternoon’s live broadcast puts his Fourth in the spotlight. With haunting solo clarinet passages and a final movement full of character – it has echoes of Shostakovich’s touch which is understandable considering the close and long-standing friendship Weinberg formed with his fellow composer.
