About this event

Two Beethoven symphonies of dancing athleticism, the Seventh being the last work directed by Proms founder-conductor Sir Henry Wood before his death, frame a pair of what he would have called 'novelties'.

Emmanuel Pahud has sought to compensate for the dearth of celebrated flute concertos by championing new ones.

Marc-André Dalbavie's recent piece is opulent, tender and squarely in the French tradition, Elliott Carter's dazzler an engaging product of his remarkable Indian summer - it was completed early in 2008, when the composer was 99 years old.
