Â鶹ԼÅÄ National Orchestra of Wales, in the first year of a new 3-year Festival residency, play two works written a mere 45 years apart, but separated by the most tumultuous era in Russia’s history: Rachmaninov’s beloved Piano Concerto No. 2 and Shostakovich’s playful Symphony No. 9. The latter was premiered in 1945, the same year the quintessentially British Brief Encounter cemented the former into our nation’s consciousness. Thomas Hyde’s comic overture brings a further British twist: a tribute to the legendary Les Dawson, 25 years after his death.
