About this concert
Ryan Wigglesworth makes his first Aberdeen appearance since being appointed the Â鶹ԼÅÄ SSO’s Chief Conductor Designate, with a programme steeped in folk traditions. Sir James MacMillan’s depiction of persecution and redemption in 17th-century Scotland has become a modern classic since the Â鶹ԼÅÄ SSO gave the premiere in 1990. And when Czech listeners first experienced Dvořák’s Seventh they recognised the music of their homeland and heard it as a drama of national reawakening – but you don’t need Bohemian blood to be swept along by its passion and glorious melodies. As contrast to these tumultuous orchestral visions, Mozart’s first Flute Concerto, an elegant, under-appreciated gem performed here by the outstanding flautist Adam Walker.
Please note that Marin Alsop has withdrawn from this concert. We are grateful to Ryan Wigglesworth for stepping in to conduct at short notice.
