Concert Information

Shostakovich called his Fifth Symphony “a Soviet artist’s response to just criticism” – but then, he didn’t have much of a choice. And every note screams out a different, much darker story.

From its tempestuous opening to its final, blazing chords, this is music that demands to be heard: angry, heartfelt, and utterly compelling. John Storgårds knows exactly how to play the long game; expect a roof-raising finish to a concert that begins with Leonard Bernstein’s practically-perfect little zinger of a comedy overture, and features a rare chance to hear the sparkling, supercharged piano concerto by Benjamin Britten; Bernstein and Shostakovich’s mutual friend.

It’s like a blast of spring air – and as soloist, Lancashire’s own Kathryn Stott will throw the windows wide open.
