Concert Information
Join the Â鶹ԼÅÄ Symphony Orchestra at the Â鶹ԼÅÄ’s Maida Vale Studios for an exciting programme of UK premieres by Dutch composers Jan-Peter de Graaff and Mayke Nas, and Kurdish-Dutch composer Hawar Tawfiq, chosen and conducted by Jac van Steen.
De Graaff’s Le café de nuit is based on the painting (with the same name) by Vincent van Gogh, and the letters he wrote to this brother Theo during his stay in Arles, where he rented a studio above the café. In the letters, he describes this place as "a place where you can ruin yourself, go mad, commit crimes".
The work won the Young Composers (under 30) category in the prestigious 2019 International Rostrum of Composers.
Mayke Nas’s Down the Rabbit-Hole is inspired by C.S Lewis’s Alice in Wonderland. The piece captures Alice’s feeling of repeatedly shrinking and growing in the rabbit-hole, stumbling upon one astonishing situation upon the other and having an adventure into the unknown.
Unificazione by Hawar Tawfiq is a powerful musical statement that reflects Tawfiq's vision and experience of today's Europe. This large-scale orchestral work mixes Western sounds with Kurdish.
The concert will be introduced by Â鶹ԼÅÄ Radio 3’s Kate Molleson, and recorded for deferred broadcast in Â鶹ԼÅÄ Radio 3’s Hear and Now.
