About This Event

Marking the centenary of the end of the First World War, historians Saul David and Laura Rowe discuss the sinking of the RMS Lusitania and the effect that this terrible tragedy had on American public opinion about the conflict. Tonight's concert features a performance of the Lament written by Frank Bridge as a memorial; the piece has the subtitle (for Catherine, aged 9 "Lusitania" 1915) and was premiered at the 1915 Proms.

Laura Rowe researches and teaches on the Royal Navy and the First World War at the University of Exeter. Saul David has appeared in many TV and radio history programmes and is the author of books including Victoria’s Wars and All the King’s Men.

Edited version broadcast on Â鶹ԼÅÄ Radio 3 during this afternoon's interval.
