Gospel truth

2012 saw the release of The Bravest Man in the Universe, Bobby's first album in two decades which threw him back into the spotlight as the stalwart of modern soul.

Starting his first gospel group with his brothers at the age of 9, Womack was championed by Sam Cooke and went on to perform with the likes of Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Elvis and Aretha Franklin, impressing them with his way around a guitar. With his trademark raspy baritone and majestic command of R&B, recent years have seen him collaborate with Gorillaz, adding some dubstep melodies to his heartfelt persuasions.

The writer behind The Rolling Stones first number one - It's All Over Now - the giants of Saturday's Pyramid Stage need to pay their dues to Mr Womack; whose life of music, addiction and sorrow has provided rich pickings for his weather-beaten, awesome soul.
