Concert Information

This evening’s conductor, Jamie Phillips, became the youngest ever assistant conductor of the Manchester-based Hallé Orchestra at the age of just 20. Tonight he conducts two symphonies - Sibelius' 1st and Haydn's 100th.

Haydn opens this evening’s programme as the orchestra perform Symphony No. 100 (Military). One of the greatest and most immediate successes of Haydn's career, this piece explores the use of military instruments and their place in a symphony.

29 year old flautist Adam Walker, one of the top international flautists, plays Mozart's G major Flute Concerto - a work of delectable melody and elegance.

This evening’s programme concludes with Sibelius’ intensely personal First Symphony. From its long, melancholy solo clarinet opening, through to an urgent timpani-fuelled first climax, Sibelius’ First Symphony has a particular tunefulness reminiscent of Tchaikovsky.
