Principal Guest Conductor John Storgårds brings the high drama of Inextinguishable, Carl Nielsen’s fourth symphony, to Salford this afternoon. The final movement - with battling timpanis and leaping strings - famously leaves audiences feeling emotionally spent but spiritually energised.

Before this, Gillian Callow will deliver Pēteris Vasks’s Concerto for Cor Anglais, one of the few solo pieces written that showcase the instrument’s scope and expression.
