From Lichfield Cathedral, the Orchestra reflects on World War One with performances of the Lark Ascending and Symphony No.5, offering a glimpse of Vaughan Williams at his most pastoral and reflective. Colin Matthew's extraordinary No Man's Land performed by baritone Roderick Williams and tenor Robin Tritschler - which premiered to great acclaim at the 2011 Proms - uses a text by Christopher Reid to evoke the many facets of war: grim black humour, desperation, patriotic songs on a honky-tonk piano and ricocheting orchestral tuttis.
