Concert Information

The light and the shadowy side of fairy tales: Ravel’s Mother Goose ballet suite conjures up enchanted stories with happy-ever-after endings, while, in Duke Bluebeard’s Castle*, Bartók mines the darkest reaches of psychology in his enthralling operatic masterpiece. American mezzo Michelle DeYoung plays the innocent Judith, inexorably and willingly led towards entombment.

Young Swedish composer Albert Schnelzer made a big impact at the 2010 Proms with his A Freak at Burbank, which re-imagined Haydn in an American suburb. His new concert-opener -Tales from Suburbia - promises to make a splash: ‘an exceptional flair for orchestral virtuosity … - an important new composer, no question’. The Guardian
