About this concert
Please note the change to the previously advertised conductor and repertoire. Tabita Berglund is unwell and we are grateful to Nuno Coelho for joining us at such short notice.
Piano concertos don’t come more popular or romantic than Rachmaninov’s Second, forever enshrined in the public’s imagination as the soundtrack to 'Brief Encounter'. Stephen Hough is just the soloist to make it sound brand new, without losing a drop of its tightly wrought emotion.
Nuno Coelho conducts and opens with Dvořák's 'Othello' overture, the third in a triptych of overtures called 'Nature, Life and Love' and inspired by Shakespeare’s play. Jean Sibelius, meanwhile, found inspiration in the ancient myths of Finland’s Kalevala, portraying the life of the hero Lemminkäinen with a timeless intensity, most hauntingly in the famous 'Swan of Tuonela'.
This concerts ends at approximately 4:05pm.
