Written in the wake of a failed affair, William Walton’s powerful First Symphony runs the emotional gamut – from heartbreak via contemplation to a profoundly optimistic ending. More than 80 years after its premiere, it’s now regarded as one of the great British symphonies. In the South, Elgar’s postcard from the Italian Riviera, opens the concert, before violinist Jennifer Pike joins Juanjo Mena and the orchestra for Sibelius’s Violin Concerto, which blends intense lyricism with technical virtuosity.
