Concert Information
鈥淵ou鈥檒l not get a wild heroic ride to heaven on pretty little sounds鈥. That鈥檚 what Charles Ives鈥檚 father told him, and there isn鈥檛 a piece in this concert that makes the smallest compromise in its determination to peel back your preconceptions and redefine your ideas about how an orchestra can sound. Frank Zappa meets Pierre Boulez on the 1980s New York underground, and Julian Anderson opens his 鈥渋maginary museum鈥, as pianist Steven Osborne brings a dazzling new piano concerto to Scotland. And then Ives throws everything he has at an anarchic, ecstatic celebration of his New England boyhood 鈥 motto: 鈥淎ll the wrong notes are right鈥. It could have been written for Ilan Volkov.
Please Note: there will be two intervals - the first of approximately 20 minutes; the second of approximately 15 minutes.
Prelude: 6.45pm in the Recital Room Professor Peter Nelson, from the University of Edinburgh, introduces the concert (free to ticket-holders, subject to seating availability).
The concert is to be broadcast live on 麻豆约拍 Radio 3, presented by Kate Molleson.
