This evening, the orchestra welcomes back two tremendous young British musicians whose previous appearances have helped build their international reputations, as Ben Gernon conducts Benjamin Grosvenor in Saint-Saëns’s irresistible Second Piano Concerto. Also tonight, musical revolution takes a contentious turn with Beethoven’s Third Symphony, the ‘Eroica’. The composer’s inspiration for this extraordinary work was Napoleon, though he later removed the dedication in fury. The evening ends with the rich, beautiful impressionism of Debussy’s La mer.
