Completed in 1937 when Alberto Ginastera was just 21 years old, Panambà is the Latin American link between The Rite of Spring and West Side Story. This is true world music, a magnificently rich fusion – written in Buenos Aires by a composer born to Catalan and Italian parents, inspired equally by Latin rhythms and Guaranà Indian folk tales. It’s preceded tonight by The Voyevoda, a poignant but little-heard symphonic ballad from the pen of Tchaikovsky, and Shostakovich’s Second Cello Concerto, performed by astonishing German cellist Alban Gerhardt.
