Change of conductor

Due to illness, Diego Matheuz will no longer be conducting this evening. Rory Macdonald replaces him, and we wish Diego a speedy recovery.

Programme

Concert Information

In a change to the original programme, Rory Macdonald conducts the orchestra for an evening of music from Berlioz, Elgar and Mussorgsky.

Tonight’s programme opens with the riotous Roman Carnival overture which, inspired by Berlioz's eighteen months in Italy, is nine minutes of dashing music dressed in Berlioz's brightest colours.

Winner of the Â鶹ԼÅÄ Young Musician Competition in 2012, Laura van der Heijden, performs Elgar’s Cello Concerto. Its lyrical and passionate message has made it a favourite with audiences.

Goblins, witches, talking skulls and dancing chickens: music doesn't get any more fantastic than this evening’s closer - Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition. When Ravel drenches them all in the colours of the orchestral rainbow the results are simply ear tingling.
