Australian conductor Simone Young leads this afternoon’s recording for Â鶹ԼÅÄ Radio 3 with music from turn of the century Austria.
Webern’s Passacaglia, composed whilst he was being tutored by Arnold Schoenberg, takes its influence from Brahms’ Fourth Symphony. Three Fragments from Berg’s opera Wozzeck depict conflict and have echoes of his own service in the First World War.
Concluding today’s concert is the euphoric symphonic poem Feste in Herbst by Joseph Marx. Translating as ‘Autumnal Festival’, this piece conjures a picture of seasonal transition.
