Shostakovich Piano Concerto No. 2

Shostakovich’s swift and purposeful second piano concerto seems perfectly suited to the promising talents of his son, Maxim, as well as showcasing great melodic craft in the beautiful central movement. The Austrian forests and Alps, with their beauty and folklore, were a deep fund of inspiration for Mahler throughout his life. This symphony is his first, typically ambitious, step in celebrating their spell-like hold.
