Concert Information
A dynamic programme performed by students from the Guildhall School of Music, including Steve Reich’s masterly Music for Pieces of Wood (1973) borne from a desire to make music with the simplest possible means and ‘one of the loudest pieces I have ever composed’ to Brian Ferneyhough’s tiny but striking tribute to his teacher Klaus Huber. Lachenmann and Kagel lend two blissfully subversive works: in Guero, the piano keyboard itself becomes a bizarre, untuned percussion instrument while Maurizio Kagel’s Rrrr confounds all expectation in an archly theatrical set of duos, drawing on everyday sounds, noises, objects and classic percussion.
