Debussy was always searching for ‘correspondence’ between his music and the world of poetry and art. La Mer gives us the ocean at all levels, from the light dancing at its surface to the god-like might beneath, both terrifying and awesome. Messiaen was also deeply sensitised to such connections. We’ll look at how much he shares with Debussy and how he found his own symbolism and dramatic new correspondence.
