    Hi to all,

I'm wondering if anyone out there has any information regarding the Cult of Asklepios on the island of Kos. I've only managed to find the usual tourist websites with a brief paragraph regarding this, so any links would be much appreciated. I recently visited the site of the Asklepion on Kos, and found the whole thing very interesting indeed.
Any help and advice greatly appreciated!

    Best wishes
    DL

    Hiya DL,

You are actually talking about the country side of Hippocrates and Asklepios the God of healing.

Have you tried some of the search engines?

    Hi Dirk,

Yes that's exactly it. I visited the site of the Asklepion and the plane tree last week, but all I seem to be finding on the net is the brief version, and lots of detail on the Hippocratic oath. I'm obviously looking in the wrong direction, so just looking for some help really!

    Thanks
    DL

    DL,

Is this of any help to you:

From the 4th century BCE people visited the sanctuary at Epidauros- in much the same way as the sick make pelgrimages to Lourdes today- in the hope of being cured of their ailments by the god Asklepios ( Asclepius or Γ†sculapius).

Actually according to one tradition ,Asklepios was a mortal who was taught the healing by the centaur Chiron, but another suggests that Apollo (whose powers included healing) was his father.

The Asklepios cult flourished and was introduced to Rome after a plaguein 293 BCE.

After the killing of Asklepios by Zeus , Apollo requested that he was placed among the stars.

    Many thanks Dirk,

I hadn't found anything on the mythology behind the cult, only the basic details. Could it be said that the cult of Asklepios was a major factor in the development of Greek (and thereby Western) civilization? My knowledge on this is very poor I'm afraid, but interested to know anyone's opinion!

    Thanks
    DL

D.L, I knew that there was a reference library but I just could not remember the web site
    address.

    Anyway here for you and others ;

You can log in to :

    www. ancientlibrary.com

This is a good way to start research, as it is a dictionary of Greek and Roman biography and mythology .

D.L bring it up and then type in the word Aesculapius, you should find it on page 44.

Have fun in your research of this library. You will find it of great interest.
