Do you think the Caedmon described by Bede in his Ecclesiastical History is accurate...or another question, do you think Caedmon even really existed?
Oh I do hope so., beetano. Quickly, someone rush in with proof. These sort of stories were part of my childhood and fascination with history.

Was Caedmon the cowherd at the abbey who was singing away angelically when he was overheard by the Abbess who realised he had a gift from god and encouraged him to do more singing?
If so, then I agree that he is one of the figures from my early school history - we didn't get many stories about the Saxons, and he was definitely one of them.
We got some stuff about St Aiden, and St Iona and St Augustine and St Patrick, and then it was Alfred and the Cakes and the Vikings, and then possibly Canute and then straight on to William the Conq.

Yes that's him.
I did find this online
Bede's account of Caedmon.
We do have a tendency to believe things that ar ewritten down and there is, as far as I know, no corroborative evidence for Caedmon. However, there is also no reason to disbelieve Bede, especially about something so close to home.
