And the "points on the "i"s' from Dr. Hawass. Some critique...?
And the documentary about the project from the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ yesterday:
If I click the I player it says: not available in your area (Belgium). And I can't catch Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ One anymore since last year, while it got digital. The cable provider asks an higher price for a new cable tuner to catch among others Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ One and the German ARD and the ARTE channel again, but with that I receive a lot of drivel from a hundred commercial channels en plus...
So if someone can look at the documentary to comment it. There are several contributors on a French history messageboard, who are interested and understand English.
lol beeble occasionally?
One of the questions on the French messageboard: Is this now a new method, which will add to the archaeology or does it exists already for sometime? Another question: about the size of the new pyramids?
Kind regards,
Paul.

I watched the programme as a general viewer, not an expert.
The pyramids and other structures were discovered using infra red mapping techniques courtesy of NASA.
The pyramid site at Saqqara is being excavated by one of Dr Hawass's teams, so far they seem to have definate evidence of a base. I am sorry but I did not make a note of the dimensions but it is smaller than the Giza pyramids. There have been problems caused by the recent revolution. Tomb robbers are already active in the site, not to mention the creation of a new local cemetery.
They showed the site of Tanis, not the temples but streets of small mud brick houses. The streets/lanes had shown up on the infra red mapping, a test trench found them without difficulty.
On close examination the mapping showed evidence of very early simple dwellings out in the desert. Using GPS they eventually found the site, undisturbed complete with some flint artifacts. The area, now desert, had been savannah.
It is a new method but it does require NASAs cooperation. They appear to have almost 1,0000 new sites in Egypt alone. Some of the site will turn out to be villages not everything is a pyramid or temple

The conjecture ( based on a pyramidion in the Cairo Museum, is that the monument may have belonged to the DYN XIII King Menneferra Ay. Like its DYN XII predecessors, it seems to be constructed of mud brick. The excavations have revealed an enclosure wall, typical of late Middle Kingdom and early second intermediate period archeitecture. There was also some suggestion in the aerial photography of a causeway. Presumably there will be some mortury temple ( assuming a reasonable reign length for the King. )

I watched this program in awe.
I've known for years that you can get a darned good view of what has gone on in the English countryside over the years from a helicopter, but the desert is the desert.
Using this new method so much that is below the surface comes into view.
Houses, probably streets, temples, pyramids and causeways.
It's bloomin stunning!

I really hope these incredible images and the completed site map are NOT made available online, until a close evaluation has been made.
The idea of tomb robbing in a vast scale appalls me.
There was no mention of Sais on the programme, whether deliberately or not I don't know. The tombs of the DYN XXVI (Saite) Royals have never yet been found, and, though poor and lacking in the gold and glamour of their forebears as they probably will be, they will be immensely important to Egyptologists; I hope the experts reach them first.

Paula,
was now able to watch the documentary. And yes it is an astonishing application of the NASA technology.
But has all these "modern" documentaries to have such loud music that a foreigner as I has difficulties with understanding the English. And I suppose these nearly two hours wasn't necessary while in my humble opinion the whole thing could be better explained in one hour or a three quarters. I have to confess when it was again the same narration that I many times moved the cursor (that is the nice thing you can do with the computer contrary to looking life) .
Kind regards from old grumpy Paul

You're not the first, and you certainly won't be the last to complain about the music being so loud in some of these programs, Paul. As you say, we can have it a bit quieter at times with the computer.
Put me down as another 'Grumpy' on that.

Agreed.
Makes me wish for the days of Magnus Magnusson, Mortimer wheeler and the old Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ 'Chronicle' series.

'Chronicle.' The whole family used to sit round the tele to enjoy that.
Those were the days.

I have had to give up watch the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ programmes the loud music is deafening. I am not normally a grump but I loath background music anywhere,
When it comes to documentaries I have to use the teletex. NO I AM NOT DEAF.
I soon will be though, if I watch those programmes which I used to love.
