Come along ladies, Tony wants an on screen partner, and you don't actually need to know anything about it but must have, what else, 'passion'. Presumably you'll have to go on 'a journey' as well.

Doesn't mention a salary but I'd be prepare to guess that it'll be a lot more than the archaeological computing specialist or the landscape bod will get, never mind the poor b****y diggers.

What would you look for in the new presenter - keep it clean boys - and have you any suggestions for a suitable candidate, apart from me, of course.

I'd imagine the first criteria would be someone who isn't taller than Tony.

Since that would limit the choice to either the under 8 age group or the maidens of a fairly restricted, central African gene pool, I guess they'll just have to make use of all those empty trenches for her, much as they did for Alan Ladd etc.

A shoe-in for Sandi Toksvig, then.

    I'd vote for Sandi anytime!

Apart from the obvious 'vertically challenged' qualification, her sense of humour is wonderful. Only problem I can see is that she is substantially funnier than Tony, as well as smaller? Might not sit well with the ex-turnip-fancier.

And here is me thinking that there are laws against sex discrimination. Somebody might challenge this vacancy advert in court.

I can perhaps see the need for another presenter, because Tony may be sick of having to run across fields to present the next find, but I hope that it won't be an airhead who can make lame cracks.

Before reading that, I noticed on Sunday that they seemed to be giving Faye a bit prominence than usual and did wonder if they were thinking of upgrading her.

I love Time Team... I wish the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ could get that right mix of interesting passionate informative history TV ...without all that Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ boffin Oxbridge type just 'talking at you' and the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ seems to think most history is about battles, war, killing, political celebrities, royalty, arostocrats,... its ordinary people that are the backbone of our history...and really the most interesting!

The only one critism of Time Team, is the rather long camera shots and appreciative of the female figure of the many female young Archaeologists...whty not just that all over with , with a Top-less Time Team?

Seriously though, Time Team should stay basically exactly as it is, be given a massive budget and maybe a decent Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ slot instead - if Channel 4 are unhappy keeping it.

The Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ would be silly to directly compete with a similar format to Time Team (unless CH4 dropped it), they do a wider range of programmes around archaeology and history already - Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Wales have a good series on the work of the RCAHMW running at the moment which is worth watching on iPlayer or FreeSat if outside Wales.

I don't think the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ "think most history is about battles, war, killing, political celebrities, royalty, arostocrats". A couple of weeks ago there was an excellent programme on the use of children for labour in the 19th Century. At the end of last year there was another excellent short series comparing people in a survey by Rowntree around 1900 with the present day.

I don't know what RCAHMW but I agree that the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ's history coverage is as broad as you suggest. I liked the series about Victorian do-gooders by Iain Hislop. And in the past there have been many programs about the railways etc. I could criticise and say that many subjects are not treated very seriously and in depth, and if there is an obsession it is with the 19th and 20th centuries, with times like the 17th and 18th century virtually never mentioned. I cannot remember the history of other nations being mentioned at all.
