The Wall of Severus?

  Should Hadrian's Wall be measured from South Shields to Ravenglas or Wallsend to Bowness on Solway?

  I suppose that depends on whether it is the wall or the defences.
  I would say the wall was from Wallsend to Bowness, with the the forts to the west of Bowness being part of the same defensive line, but not part of the wall.
  South Shields I couldn't consider part of the wall -mainly because it's on the wrong side of the Tyne - but, as the main supply port for the wall it should also be considered as of the same defensive line.
  
  I suppose where Roman defenses began or ended is subjective though.

  I suppose I was wondering if the line of defences were included when the reporting of the repair of Hadrian's Wall by Severus was stipulated as being 132 miles and has led to the debate regarding Offa's Dyke as being the Wall that Severus repaired.
  
  I believe that Severus refurbished many forts including some of the Welsh forts, so it doesn't seem impossible that he would also repair the Western Coastal Forts.
