I would like to enquire about the 'ode to joy' organ soundtrack clip used in the programme 'Montezuma' presented by Dan Snow.

Is there anyone out there who can advise me on the artist who recorded this piece and where it would abailable for purchase.

Its been driving me bananas since I first saw the programme.

    Thanks for any information.

    Brian

I thought the programme on Montezuma was a very good one....

I've always been interested in the meeting of cultures, such as the Aztecs and the Incas, and their first encounters with Europeans, with unfortunate consequences for their empires, of course.

Shivfan, try a book called 1491 by Charles Mann.

The irony of the European colonization is that the two peoples who most understood the Spanish mentality are the Aztecs and Incas themselves. Both were aggressive, imperialist powers who provoked a lot of hatred among their client states. Smallpox slaughtered the Indians by the million, but the Inca and Aztec empires were still young and vibrant as the Spanish conquored them. In Mexico, the Spanish found willing allies in the Tlaxcalans. In Peru, the Colla and Huancas provided willing allies as teh Spanish played off the two factions of an Inca civil war.

The peoples of the Americas were far from naive about the arrival of Europeans seeing them as potential allies to further their own ends.
