In one hand the greek KOINE DIALECTOS that it was The English of that age in the other hand the formidable Infrastructure and legal- administrative system of the Roman Empire.
In my opinion, the Roman Empire play the fondamental role becouse it merged the difference culture of Mediterranean Sea in a country where put the New Testament's seed.
Why not both?
The Hellenistic influence as the most important in the earlier period, and Roman culture to introduce christianity into Europe across the Alps.
Just a guess...
Well in the east it was more the Hellenistic influence and in the west the Latin. Even modern Catholic and Orthodox churches represent so, ins't it? On the overall the Hellenistic precedes the Latin but at the end that was more due to geographic proximity. Had Jesus and his students been born in Morocco or Andalusia we would have the opposite, Latin first, then Hellenistic.
