I have just started watching Lost City of the Ancients - Vanished Capital of the Pharoah on iplayer and I'm not sure I want to go on.
In the first 5 minutes it states that Ramesses II was born a commoner and I'm sure from my modest secondary school education that he was the son of Seti I.
I hate watching such grossly inaccurate history documentaries - they always leave you more mis-informed than you were to start with.
If such a big budget documentary can get wrong, what a 10 year old can find out in 2 minutes on Wikipedia, where is the hope for the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ?

Well I'm sure by now you have confirmed on the net that you are correct. Ramesses II was indeed a son of Seti I, and he in turn was the only known son of Ramesses I.
It is known that under Amenhotep III a member of a family of Ramesses occupied the position of Major-domo and or General in the military.
So, it is possible that Ramesses II was decended from this Egyptian common stock.

It isn't that straightforward. The reign of the predecessors of Ramses II was short: His father 11 years (perhaps more), his grandfather only a year and a half. It is assumed that Ramses II became pharaoh in his twenties -- so that he was not born as a prince. He must have been a young boy when Horemheb appointed his grandfather to become his successor on the throne.

Whether "born as a commoner" is a fair description is something else: He was born as the grandson of the second most powerful man in the country, as Ramses I had been Horemheb's vizier.
