During the last glacial maximum [LGM] portions of northern Siberia,Alaska and the Canadian Yukon were ice free,because there was not adequate moisture to form ice sheets and glaciers.Flora and fauna remains ,which were retrieved from Yukon mining outcrops,indicated that during the LGM the region was dominated by organisms similar to those in extant steppe and tundra environments.There was sufficient low vegetation ground cover to support Yukon horse,steppe bison and woolly mammoths. During the LGM Arctic ground squirrels were common in the northern Yukon.Grass cover allowed the suns rays to warm the soil and the ground squirrels were able to make burrows.Today moss and litter from boreal vegetation insulate the ground and it usually remains frozen during the summer months.
Arctic ground squirrels no longer frequent the northern regions ,because they can not dig burrows,[source:GSA Today:October 2009].
