After the fantastic Anglo-Saxon hoard being revealed the other week, it appears that a metal detectorist has discovered several Iron Age golden torcs buried in a field near Stirling. Apparently it is the finest such find anywhere in Scotland. The precise location is being kept secret so that it can be fully explored by a team of archaeologists.

According to the TV report, it was the finder's first attempt at using a metal detector and he had only taken a few steps into his first field when he found the treasure. I wish I could get him to fill in my lottery ticket.

I bought a metal detector in the seventies. At that time they were very basic and were as heavy as hell. I used it locally around where I live
(Dudley) and had a little success. I found some old pewter kitchenware one time and lots of discharged musket balls in the woods around Himley Hall. I know that the gunpowder plotters were holed up close to there, and of course it set me wondering...They were supposed to have hidden some personal possessions, gold and silver etc, in the woods, but my attempts at discovering them was in vain.
I got rid of the 'detector' because I eventually got frustrated with it and can't remember what I did with the artefacts I found...the missus probably used 'em for garden pots!
